About Catarata Río Fortuna

The postcard shot of La Fortuna: a drop of over seventy metres ending in a clear pool, six kilometres from town. You climb down some five hundred steps, and you climb back up. It is run by ADIFORT, the local development association, which reinvests the fees in community projects.

What to expect
  • A drop of about 70 metres down a volcanic rock face, ringed by forest.
  • You go down some 500 steps, and you have to climb back up: that is the hard part.
  • At the bottom there is a pool you can swim in. The water is clear and cold.
  • Allow an hour and a half to two hours at a relaxed pace.

  • Entrance: about 18 dollars for foreign visitors and 9 for nationals. Under 8s go free.
  • Buying online costs a couple of dollars more and saves you the queue.
  • What to bring: swimsuit, towel, shoes with grip and water.
