About Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal
A protected area with two sectors and two cones: Arenal, still active, and Chato, dormant with a lagoon inside its crater. Marked trails cross secondary forest and hardened lava fields, on walks of one and a half to three hours. Tickets are not sold online: you buy them at the gate the day of your visit.

What to expect
- Two sectors, Volcan and Peninsula, both with views of the cone.
- The most walked trail is Las Coladas, nearly 2 km, reaching the remains of the 1992 lava flow.
- El Ceibo, another 2 km, passes a giant kapok tree and an enormous strangler fig.
- In the Peninsula sector there is a trail designed for reduced mobility and a viewpoint at the end.

- The trails in the Volcan sector are dirt and loose rock over lava: not wheelchair accessible.
Additional information
- Entrance: 15 dollars for foreign visitors, about 1,000 colones for nationals.
- Open every day of the year, holidays included.
- Climbing the cone and its immediate surroundings is forbidden, and fires are not allowed. It is not fussiness: the volcano is still active.
- Tickets are bought at the gate on the day.
